The first British Open was first played way back in 1860, the precise date on October 17 at Prestwick Golf Club in Ayrshire, Scotland. The tournament was limited to professionals, and the field was a whopping eight Scottish golfers. A far cry from the total number of golfers fans with British Open tickets will get to see. The eight players played three rounds of golf on Prestwick Golf Club’s 12-hole course. The winner of the first British Open was Willie Park Senior with a total score of 174. From the first British Open through 1870, the winner of the golf tournament was awarded the Champion’s Belt, a red leather belt with a silver buckle. The belt was retired in 1870 when Young Tom Morris was allowed to keep the belt for winning the British Open golf tournament three years in a row. The Champion’s Belt was replaced by the Golf Championship Trophy, which is also known as the Claret Jug.
